Auto-enrolment: Teething problems for Dunelm

The Pensions Regulator has issued its first auto-enrolment Section 89 report against Dunelm Soft Furnishing Limited (Dunelm), which failed to complete its auto-enrolment registration by the relevant deadline.

Following an inspection by the Regulator it found that certain employees of Dunelm had been automatically enrolled late and that consequently Dunelm had failed to pay £108,000 in employer contributions.

The report suggested several key points to be considered by employers generally when planning for auto-enrolment:

  • Make sure you develop a plan for meeting your auto-enrolment obligations.
  • Test your payroll system in advance of your staging date to ensure it is able to fulfil the requirements of auto-enrolment.
  • Sound corporate governance is essential to ensure that registration with the Regulator is completed accurately and on time.
  • If you experience challenges in meeting your auto-enrolment duties, contact the Regulator for help/guidance before it becomes too late.

If you require further advice on auto-enrolment, please contact a member of the Employment Team.
